May is National Foster/Kinship Parent Appreciation Month

May is Foster Parent/Kinship Appreciation Month. In Mesa County there are approximately 300 youth currently in the foster care program. Every child deserves a safe, loving, and permanent home.

“All young people in foster care need a meaningful connection to a caring adult who becomes a supportive and lasting presence in their lives,” stated Tracey Garchar, Executive Director of the Mesa County Department of Human Services. During May we thank and recognize our foster care families, who care for these youth within our community, adds Garchar.

In Mesa County, over 100 certified foster and kinship families open their homes and hearts to children whose families are in crisis and play a vital role in helping children and families heal and reconnect.  Foster care homes give these children a safe environment where each child’s life can be changed for the better.  Please join us in honoring foster families who dedicate their lives to helping children in our community.

Currently, the highest area of need for foster care homes is for teenagers. These homes should not only provide stability, but will also offer mentoring to these teens as they transition into adulthood.

Note to Media:  Please note that foster children CANNOT be filmed under any circumstances.
